Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (May 20th, 2013) -- Modesto was able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to tie or win the game, but Rawhide closer Jake Barrett shut the door and preserved a 5-2 Visalia win on Monday night at John Thurman Field.
After issuing two walks and giving up a single, Ryan Casteel stepped up with one out in the ninth but on a 3-2 pitch popped out and Trevor Story did the same to end the contest as Barrett notched his 11th save of the year.
Visalia jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning against Nuts ace Dan Winkler, and never looked back en route to victory. The game started with an error by Harold Riggins at first, and after a single by Gerson Montilla, Winkler issued back-to-back walks to get the Rawhide on the board. Later in the first, Tom Belza singled in a pair of runs to cap the inning.
Winkler would allow a solo home run to Jake Lamb in the third, but finished the night retiring his last eight in a row. The right-hander took just his second loss of the year, his first since April 28th against San Jose.
Rawhide lefty Keith Hessler (3-1) was dominant, retiring the first 12 batters of the game and eventually taking a no-hitter into the seventh. After hitting Tyler Massey in the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Featherston doubled into right-field to break the no-hit bid. Modesto then scored their only runs of the game on a 2-RBI single by Ryan Casteel.
Having now lost three in a row, the Nuts (19-25) will try to salvage a win in the series as they wrap up play against the Rawhide (28-16). RHP Tyler Gagnon (2-3, 5.98) will make the start for Modesto, opposite RHP Kyle Winkler (1-3, 6.82) for Visalia. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
