Modesto Nuts News Release

SAN JOSE, CA (June 10th, 2013) -- Having already been eliminated from the first-half title contention, Modesto played the role of spoiler on Monday night as they rallied late to force extra innings, and pulled away in the 10th for a 6-2 win over the Giants at Municipal Stadium.

The Nuts (31-33) trailed by a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but would not quit in a thrilling win over the first-place Giants (39-25).

Nuts starter Dan Winkler put together another stellar effort, going seven innings while allowing just one run on three hits, but was out-dueled by Giants lefty Kelvin Marte, who went seven shutout frames.

Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, Ryan Casteel hammered the first pitch of the inning from Cody Hall, hooking it over the left field fence for a game-tying home run.

San Jose would quickly rally to retake the lead though, as cleanup hitter Mac Williamson delivered a go-ahead RBI single against Nuts closer Scott Oberg in the bottom of the eighth. Geoff Parker started the inning, and had given up two singles while collecting two outs. After giving up the go-ahead run, Oberg walked Devin Harris but retired catcher Jeff Arnold with the bases loaded to keep it a one run game.

Modesto then rallied to tie the game in the ninth against All-Star closer Josh Osich. Taylor Featherston got things going with a one-out double, and after a single by Jared Simon, Featherston scored the tying run on a passed ball by Arnold. Osich would get out of further trouble, sending it to the bottom of the ninth where the Giants were retired in order by Nuts reliever Nelson Gonzalez.

The Nuts then pulled away in the top of the 10th as Osich opened the inning with a walk to Harold Riggins. After a bunt attempt by David Kandilas was caught on a diving catch by Angel Villalona for the first out, Niko Gallego singled to left center to get Riggins into scoring position. Trevor Story then pulled one through the left side of the infield, with Riggins beating a throw to the plate by Devin Harris for the go-ahead run. Brian Humphries followed with an infield RBI single, and Taylor Featherston capped off the inning with a 2-run triple against reliever Stephen Harrold.

Osich (1-1), who had allowed only four earned runs in his 25 appearances this season, was tagged for five runs (four earned) in his first loss of the year.

Gonzalez (2-3) worked a perfect 10th to finish off the game, picking up the win.

After losing six of seven against the Giants to start the season, Modesto has now won the last three meetings. Even with the defeat, San Jose shaved their major number to clinch the first-half title to three as second-place Stockton and Visalia both lost tonight. Only six games remain until the all-star break.

The series continues on Tuesday night with game two of a three-game series. RHP Tyler Gagnon (5-3, 6.19) faces Giants LHP Edwin Escobar (0-3, 3.62). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
