Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks fell behind early thanks to an eight-run High Desert Mavericks second inning and went on to lose their eighth game in a row, 8-3, in the series opener in front of 3,189 on Monday night at The Hangar.
After retiring the side in order in the top of the first, starter David Rollins (5-4) failed to record an out in the second.
Dan Paolini and Ramon Morla began the inning with back-to-back home runs to start the scoring. Kevin Rivers and Steven Baron followed with a walk and a single to set the stage for Nate Melendres. Melendres hit a three-run home run to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead.
Rollins failed to retire each of the next two batters and Jonas Dufek came in from the bullpen to relieve him. The right-hander struck out the first two batters he faced before hitting Paolini and walking Morla with the bases loaded. Rivers followed with a two-run single to put High Desert up 8-0.
Mavericks starter Stephen Landazuri (3-2) took the lead and ran with it, en route to his fifth straight start in which he has gone at least five innings and allowed two or fewer runs.
Nolan Fontana hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season, to lead off the fourth inning. It was the only run Landazuri allowed in the game. The right-hander struck out eight, walked three and gave up three hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Tommy Shirley delivered a solid outing out of the bullpen retiring all eight batters he faced while striking out three.
Tyson Perez, the tandem starter, went four scoreless innings to finish the game and allowed just two hits. He struck out four and walked one batter.
Matt Duffy picked up the JetHawks second run of the game with a solo homer off reliever Bobby Shore in the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Chris Epps led off with a double and scored on a Delino DeShields sacrifice fly for Lancaster's final run of the game. Epps went 3-for-4 joining Preston Tucker, 2-for-4, as the only JetHawks hitters to record multi-hit games.
With the JetHawks loss and Inland Empire's 3-0 win over Stockton, the 66ers are now just two games back in the South Division standings with six games to play in the first half. Lancaster held a seven game lead with 14 games to play.
The JetHawks (35-29) will attempt to end the losing streak on Tuesday night in game two of the series against High Desert (32-32) at 7:00 pm. Luis Cruz (2-4, 4.98) will pitch for the JetHawks against Cameron Hobson (4-4, 4.98).
