Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, PA-- A fielder's choice RBI groundout in the top of the fourth inning stood up as the winning run for the Norwich Navigators in a 1-0 win over the Altoona Curve on a rainy Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark.
After a 1 hour, 34 minute rain delay, Norwich (19-24) got six shutout innings from starting pitcher James Garcia, two from reliever Erick Threets and a scoreless ninth inning from closer Alfredo Simon in evening the four-game series against the Curve at one game apiece. Garcia (3-4), who had not worked past the fifth inning in any of his first 12 appearances for the Navigators, picked up his third win of the season. Simon's scoreless ninth inning earned him his second save.
Altoona (21-20) managed seven hits in the contest, but left five of their six stranded runners in scoring position in getting shutout for just the second time this season. Craig Stansberry tripled in the second inning and was the only Curve baserunner to reach third base in the contest. Tom Evans recorded the Curve's lone multi-hit game by going 2-for-4 with a double.
Curve starter Paul Maholm allowed the game's only run in the fourth inning and suffered the hard-luck loss in falling to 1-2 on the season. The 22-year old left-hander, who was making just his second start after a two-week stint on the Disabled List with a groin injury, allowed just that one run on five hits over six innings of work. Maholm walked just one batter and struck out five.
In the fourth, with runners at first and third and no one out, second baseman Anthony LaBarbera bounced out to shortstop to push across Carlos Valderrama with the game's lone run.
The loss was just the fourth for the Curve in their last 16 games at Blair County Ballpark.
Altoona and Norwich will finish their four-game set with consecutive 10:35 AM first pitches at Blair County Ballpark on Wednesday and Thursday. In the first of the two morning contests on Wednesday, the Curve will send right-hander Paul Stewart (3-3, 4.32) to the mound against Norwich righty David Aardsma (6-2, 3.07).
