North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore offense couldn't keep pace with the Grays attack in this game and they dropped a 7-3 decision in the first game of the series on Friday night at the New Fraser Field.
Jake Mullis took the loss for the Spirit, dropping him to .500 on the season (5-5). Mike Henry picked up the win for the Grays, his sixth victory of the year.
The Grays got to Mullis early, scoring twice in the first inning. Bernard Caston led off the game with a double to right field. Mullis retired the next two batters he faced on ground balls to the infield before giving up an RBI single to Mark Burke. Charles Peterson scored Burke with another RBI single two batters later to put the Grays ahead, 2-0.
The Spirit cut their lead in half in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run from Rob Fischer. The Spirit could have tied the score, but Garrett Weir was cut down trying to steal second on the pitch prior to Fischer's blast.
The Spirit benefited from a Grays error in the second inning to even the score at two. Brian Macchi started the inning with a single, and scored on a two-out base hit from Marcos Agramonte. The throw from Grays right fielder Darren Ciraco beat Macchi to the plate, but the catcher couldn't hold on to the baseball and Macchi was called safe.
Unfortunately for the Spirit, they didn't hold onto the tie for very long. The Grays regained the lead in the sixth inning on a three-run home run from Peterson. Joe Jiannetti led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Ciraco drew the walk. Peterson scored both with his fifth home run of the year, putting the Grays ahead, 5-2.
The Grays padded their lead with two more in the seventh inning on another home run. This time it was Mark Burke who went deep. After Caston led off the inning with a single, Mullis managed to retire the next two batters he faced before surrendering the long ball.
The North Shore offense finally got something going in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late. Davidson and B.J. Weed drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Davidson took third on a fly ball to right from Marcos Agramonte. He scored on an error by the Grays second baseman, but that was all the scoring the Spirit would manage in the inning.
North Shore will try to snap their brief losing streak when they host the Grays in the second game of the series tomorrow night at New Fraser Field.
