Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, have signed contracts with third baseman Ozney Guillen and utility player Sean Gerber. The 2014 season with the CornBelters will be the first season in professional baseball for both players. The CornBelters will play their first regular season home game of the 2014 season ("CEFCU Opening Night") at The Corn Crib on Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m. versus the Evansville Otters.
Guillen joins the CornBelters after playing at St. Thomas University. In 2013 he finished with a team best .415 batting average and a .483 on base percentage. He is the son of former Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen.
"Ozney is a big strong guy that can supply power in the middle of the lineup," said CornBelters Field Manager Brooks Carey. "He has a strong baseball background thru his father which is always a plus."
The Florida native, Guillen, was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox but did not sign with them.
The left handed hitting, Gerber, enters the 2014 season after playing his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. He started in all 52 games for the Pointers and finished with a .363 batting average during his senior season. He hit a team high 12 home runs and added 17 doubles.
"Gerber is one the most versatile players I've seen in quite some time. A player like this is going to give us plenty of options," said Carey. "He's a big strong catcher that can also play any infield position."
This winter, Gerber has been playing with the San Antonio Alamos in the Texas Winter Ball League. In 18 games he batted .327 with two home runs and 13 walks.
