Norfolk Tides News Release

First inning home runs by Joe Mahoney and Brandon Waring helped power Norfolk to an 8-2 win over the Columbus Clippers Thursday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides sent eight men to the plate in the first frame against Eric Berger (2-4), taking a 5-0 lead. Mahoney belted a one-out, three-run homer to put the Tides on the board, and three batters later Waring followed with a two-run shot to left field.

Mahoney finished with three hits in the contest, and he's now hit .337 (32-for-95) with six doubles, three home runs and eight RBI over his last 13 games.

The early offense was more than enough for Jake Arrieta, who improved to 3-1 in his fourth start with Norfolk. Arrieta allowed two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work, as he walked four and struck out five. The 26-year-old threw 64 of his season-high 116 pitches for strikes.

L.J. Hoes added three hits and a walk in five plate appearances to help push the Tides (57-56) over the .500 mark. Hoes has now reached base safely in 13 of his last 18 plate appearances, as he's collected eight singles and five walks over his last four contests.

With the win, Norfolk surpassed its win total from the 2011 season, when the Tides finished with a 56-87 record.

The two clubs will continue their four-game series Friday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15. Steve Johnson (4-7, 2.95) is slated to take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (4-2, 3.54).
