Powerful Offense Leads Indians to 13-1 Victory over Yankees

Rochester, NY - Heading into Thursday night's series opening game the Indianapolis Indians had the best record in the International League. Led by a four-run fifth inning and a season high 21 hits, they proved their worthiness with a 13-1 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.

Despite ultimately dropping the contest, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. With two outs and nobody on Eduardo Nunez crushed his first home of the season for the Yankees when he took Daniel Cabrera deep over the left field wall. However, the Indians knotted the score at 1-1 in the visiting half of the fourth when Yamaico Navarro sent an RBI single into centerfield.

The Indianapolis offense exploded for four runs in the top half of the fifth. Chase d'Arnaud started the rally with an RBI single to center giving the Indians the 2-1 advantage, but they were far from done in the inning. Jose Tabata then found the right-centerfield gap with for a two-RBI double with still no outs in the inning. Matt Hague capped the Indianapolis scoring spree when he hit Adam Warren on a comebacker. Nunez picked up the ball and fired to first for the out, but not before Tabata scored from third to make it a 5-1 ball game after 4 1/2 innings.

Indianapolis added an insurance run in the top half of the sixth on a Christian Marrero solo homer off of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre reliever Chase Whitley. Following Marrero's fifth homer of the year the Indians lead reached 6-1. Brandon Boggs added an RBI double in the top half of the eighth to give the Indians the 7-1 lead. The Indians added six more runs in the top of the eighth to take a 13-1 lead, where it would stay.

Adam Warren suffered the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. He did strike out one and walk none, while falling to 6-7 on the season. Cabrera picked up the win for the Indians, improving to an even 5-5 with Indianapolis this season. He allowed just one run on four hits over six innings on the bump. He struck out five and walked one. Daniel McCutchen got the rare three inning save in relief for the Indians.

The Yankees and the Indians take the diamond for game two of a four game series at Frontier Field on Friday evening at 7:05. Southpaw Mike O'Connor takes the ball for the Yankees, while fellow lefty Jeff Locke gets the nod for the Indians.
