Norfolk Tides News Release

Jair Jurrjens allowed one hit over seven spectacular innings, but Norfolk was blanked 1-0 in game two of a doubleheader Friday night at Harbor Park. The Tides also dropped game one of the twinbill, 5-3.

Jurrjens retired each of the first 15 batters he faced, as he needed just 42 pitches to navigate his first five innings of work before Jason Donald opened up the sixth inning with a double off the left-center field wall. Donald was then sacrificed to third on a bunt by Nevin Ashley before a Kristopher Negron sacrifice fly to right gave the Bats a 1-0 advantage.

Jurrjens (4-4), who was making his first start since June 2 due to a right thumb injury, struck out three without walking a batter, throwing 54 of his 71 pitches for strikes. He faced just one batter over the minimum, and his seven inning outing was Norfolk's first complete game of the 2013 season.

Former Tide Armando Galarraga (5-4) earned the win for Louisville, as he blanked Norfolk on three hits over five innings. Kevin Whelan and Zach Duke worked the final two frames, with Duke tossing a scoreless seventh inning in his first outing with the Bats to earn his first save of the season.

In game one, Louisville used a three-run third inning to edge Josh Stinson and the Tides, 5-3.

With the score knotted 1-1 entering the third frame, Stinson (3-3) yielded three runs (two earned) on three hits and an error. Josh Fellhauer led off the inning with a single, and Henry Rodriguez followed by reaching on a fielding error by second baseman Buck Britton. Mike Hessman then hit a chopper down the third base line that Brandon Wood lost in the evening sun, allowing Fellhauer to score and Rodriguez to advance to third. One out later, Denis Phipps ripped a two-run double to left-center field, giving the Bats a 4-1 lead.

Norfolk pulled within 4-3 in the fifth frame on a two-run homer by L.J. Hoes, his third home run of the season. Hoes also drew two walks in the contest and scored two runs.

Daniel Corcino (3-9) earned the win after allowing three runs in five innings, while Yohan Pino picked up the save by tossing two shutout innings of relief.

The two clubs will continue their four-game series Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Right-hander Daniel McCutchen (0-0, 7.45) will take the hill for Norfolk against Bats right-hander Greg Reynolds (7-0, 2.51). Saturday night is Marine Night and will feature a postgame fireworks extravaganza presented by Navy Mutual Aid.
