Nolan Named Team Captain

The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Club has announced that Head Coach/General Manager of Hockey Operations Greg Ireland has selected defenseman Doug Nolan as team captain and defenseman Mike Vellinga and forward Chris M. Thompson as alternate captains.

Nolan, a native of Quincy, Massachusetts and a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, is in his third season with the Bombers. Nolan, 26, has had stints in the American Hockey League with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (1999-2000, 2000-2001) and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2001-2002).

Vellinga, 24, is in his second season with the Bombers after playing with the team on a two-way contract with AHL Syracuse in 2001-2002. Vellinga is a onetime All-Star, having been named to the 2000-2001 Northern Conference All-Star squad while a member of the Johnstown Chiefs.

A native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Thompson, 24, is in his third season with the Bombers. He was obtained in a trade with the Greensboro Generals for Goaltender Trevor Prior on January 15, 2001.

The Bombers will continue a string of five straight road games on Friday at Reading against the Royals (7:05 p.m. game time/ 6:50 p.m. broadcast time on www.daytonbombers.com in association with www.sportsjuice.com). The Bombers were 2-3 in five meetings against the Reading Royals last season and were 1-2 in three games played at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Bombers' win in Reading came on January 4. Jamie Ling's power play goal lifted the Bombers to a 3-2 victory. This meeting marks the first and only meeting scheduled against the Royals in the 2002-2003 regular season.

On Saturday, the Bombers will play at Atlantic City against the Boardwalk Bullies (7:05 p.m./6:50 p.m. broadcast time on www.daytonbombers.com in association with www.sportsjuice.com). Last season, the Bombers enjoyed a fine rivalry with this South New Jersey team, culminating in the Dayton Bombers' 3-1 Northern Conference Final series win over the Boardwalk Bullies that lifted the Bombers to a Kelly Cup Finals appearance. During the regular season, the Bombers were 1-2 against Atlantic City, splitting a pair of meetings at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Karl Goehring recorded his first professional regular season shutout on November 7 with a 3-0, 37-save win. The Bombers play Atlantic City four more times during the regular season, all in December, two at the Nutter Center and two at Boardwalk Hall.

The Bombers' next home game is Friday, November 15, 2002 vs. Wheeling (7:30 p.m.) at the Nutter Center. Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company will be presenting "Who's Got the Real Diamond?"
