Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Following a two-home run performance on Sunday night, John Nogowski delivered the game-winning single in the ninth inning on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Nogowski broke a 3-3 tie with a one-out single to right field with the bases loaded to give the Ports their third straight win over the Bakersfield Blaze by a final of 4-3.
For the third straight game the Blaze opened the scoring, this time in the second facing Ports starter Raul Alcantara. With a runner at second and one out, Justin Seager delivered an RBI single to center to give the Blaze a 1-0 lead. It was the only run allowed by Alcantara in four innings of work. He allowed five hits while not issuing a walk and striking out four.
Taylor Thompson came on in relief of Alcantara to begin the fifth inning on a Major League rehab assignment. After striking out the first two batters, Thompson surrendered a home run to Nelson Ward that gave the Blaze a 2-0 cushion. Thompson was then lifted for Sam Roberts who recorded the final out of the inning.
Thompson pitched two-thirds of an inning on his rehab assignment and gave up the one run on the one hit. He threw 23 pitches, 17 for strikes.
Blaze starter Brett Ash kept the Ports off the board through the first four innings, including escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second. In the fifth, Stockton opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Beau Taylor and Melvin Mercedes. With one out, Brett Vertigan singled to load the bases, followed by a two-run single from Franklin Barreto that tied the game and knocked Ash from the contest.
Ash received a no-decision, going four-and-a-third innings and allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.
After 1.1 scoreless innings thrown by Sam Roberts, Sam Bragg took over for Stockton in the seventh and walked Aaron Barbosa to begin his outing. Barbosa went on to steal second and advance to third on an errant throw by Taylor. Two batters later, Barbosa scored on a groundout by Tim Lopes to give the Blaze a 3-2 lead. The run was unearned and the only run allowed by Bragg in two innings of relief.
Stockton got the equalizer in the eighth. For the third time in as many games, Matt Chapman went deep, this time a home run to lead off the inning off Blaze reliever Aaron Brooks (0-2). Stockton would go on to load the bases with nobody out after the home run, but Brooks got Mercedes to strike out, B.J. Boyd to hit a comebacker to the mound and Vertigan to ground out to escape the jam.
After Ben Bracewell (4-2) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, Brooks came back to pitch the bottom of the ninth and issued a one-out walk to Tyler Marincov. Marincov would advance to second on a wild pitch and Chapman followed with an infield single that put runners at the corners with one away. After an intentional walk of Branden Cogswell to load the bases, Nogowski came up and hit the first pitch into right field for the game-winning single to give Stockton a 4-3 victory.
Brooks, who allowed two runs on five hits in an inning-and-a-third, suffered the loss for the Blaze while Bracewell picked up the win for Stockton.
The Ports will try for a four-game sweep of the Blaze on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Dylan Covey (6-6, 4.01 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield left-hander Eddie Campbell (3-5, 6.93 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
