San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants completed a four-game sweep of Lancaster and won their sixth straight game overall with a 10-2 victory over the JetHawks on Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Tyler Horan homered to lead a 14-hit Giants offensive attack while Luis Ysla fired five no-hit innings out of the bullpen to pick-up his first win of the season. With the victory, San Jose (47-48) has now won 13 out of their last 14 games.
Horan (3-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI) smacked his team-leading 11th home run of the season and was a triple shy of the cycle on Tuesday. Brandon Bednar (2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) also contributed a pair of hits, including a key go-ahead three-run double in the bottom of the second. Seth Harrison (2-for-4, 2 RBI), John Polonius (2-for-4, 3B, RBI) and Angel Villalona (2-for-4) added two hits apiece while Christian Arroyo (1-for-3, 3 RBI) drove home three runs.
Ysla (1-4), who entered the game to begin the top of the second, did not allow any runs or hits from the second through the sixth innings. The left-hander walked two, matched a season-high with eight strikeouts and retired 15 out of the 17 batters he faced. Four Giants pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the win.
Lancaster jumped out early with a pair of runs against San Jose starter Ray Black in the top of the first inning. The game began with consecutive walks to James Ramsay and Jamie Ritchie. A wild pitch then advanced the runners to second and third before Black registered consecutive swinging strikeouts of Derek Fisher and Chase McDonald. However, Ronnie Mitchell followed by driving the first pitch of his at-bat to deep right for a triple that scored both Ramsay and Ritchie for a 2-0 JetHawks lead. Black recovered to strikeout the next batter completing a 33-pitch inning. Black struck out three, walked two and allowed two runs during his only inning of work.
After Ysla fired a scoreless top of the second, the Giants plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Three straight one-out singles from Brian Ragira, Harrison and Polonius loaded the bases. Jeff Arnold followed with a fly out to shallow right, but Bednar then stepped to the plate and ripped a double into the left field corner scoring all three runners for a 3-2 San Jose advantage.
Horan pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third when he belted an opposite field solo homer to left. The Giants then scored two more runs in the fourth. With two outs and the bases empty, Arnold drew a walk before Bednar again doubled down the left field line. The hit put runners on second and third for San Jose and they both scored when the next hitter, Arroyo, lofted a fly ball double down the right field line.
San Jose then blew the game open with a three-run bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 9-2. Villalona started the frame with a single before Horan doubled to right putting runners on second and third. After Ragira lined out to shortstop, Harrison grounded a single through the hole on the left side to bring home Villalona with the first run of the inning. Polonius followed with a sacrifice fly to right for an 8-2 advantage and then with the bases loaded and two outs, Arroyo drew a walk forcing home another run to make it 9-2.
Meanwhile, Ysla set down the JetHawks 1-2-3 in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Ysla had retired 11 straight hitters until issuing a leadoff walk to Ritchie in the top of the sixth, but the Giants reliever recovered notching three straight strikeouts of the next three hitters to end the inning.
Jeff Soptic (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 SO) didn't allow any hits over the seventh and eighth innings and pitched around three walks to maintain the seven-run cushion. San Jose then completed the scoring for the day with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Back-to-back singles from Daniel Carbonell and Villalona began the inning before a one-out walk to Ragira loaded the bases. Harrison then grounded into a force out to second with Carbonell scoring on the play for a 10-2 cushion.
Ian Gardeck (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the top of the ninth for the Giants. Brian Holberton's two-out single in the frame was Lancaster's first hit since the first inning, but Gardeck quickly came back to retire the next hitter to finish the contest.
JetHawks starter Akeem Bostick (1-3) suffered the loss after yielding eight runs (all earned) on nine hits over four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out four.
