Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG- Rio Grande Valley's Luis Noel threw seven shutout innings while the first four hitters of the WhiteWings' batting order collected 12 hits and drove in nine runs to rout the McAllen Thunder 11-0 Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Noel (2-1) allowed only two hits while fanning six and did not walk a batter in his fifth start of the season, reducing his earned run average nearly two runs to 4.24 in a quick and efficient performance.
"Today I was able to throw for strikes. I was on top and got in control early," said Noel, a former Orioles farmhand. "Every pitch, fastball, slider, change; was working well tonight."
Meanwhile, Thunder (7-17) starter Brian Murphy (1-3), who sported the lowest ERA in the McAllen rotation coming into the game at 2.66, struggled from the onset. He allowed nine hits and nine runs, five earned, while failing to make it out of the third inning to see his mark rise to 4.10.
Former Cuban National League star Leugim Barroso led the WhiteWings' 14-hit attack with four hits of his own, driving in four runs. Three times his hits drove in leadoff hitter and right fielder Francisco Santana, once with one out in the top of the second inning to give Rio Grande Valley a 5-0 lead, again in the third with a two out double for a 7-0 lead, and finally in the seventh with a single to center to plate both Santana and third baseman Bryan Marquez to close out the scoring of the game.
Santana collected three hits in the game and drove in two runs with a second inning double, while second baseman Fidel Hernandez added three more and collected an RBI in the third with an infield hit. Centerfielder Luis Somoza also had two hits and drove in the first run of the game with a two-out single to plate second baseman Barroso in the opening frame.
The WhiteWings (14-9) will host the division leading Fort Worth Cats in the first game of a four game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.
