No-Hitter and Walk-Off Hit Give RailCats Remarkable 1-0 Victory

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The stars aligned at US Steel Yard for a thrilling Gary SouthShore RailCat victory featuring two special events. Karl Triana threw the first no-hitter in franchise history and EJ Devarie secured the win with a walk-off base hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The RailCats (7-8) earned the split of the series with the division rival Kansas City T-Bones (7-8). Triana allowed six base runners but the T-Bones never threatened to score. The RailCats had two men on in the fifth but didn't get the breakthrough hit until the bottom of the ninth.

Triana had plenty of help from his defense en route to his first no-hitter and second career complete game. The Cats turned a double play, catcher Jose Gonzalez threw out two runners and Triana picked off a T-Bone.

Triana struck out the last batter he faced, Vladimir Frias, and fell to his knees in celebration. The Colombian walked off the field pounding his chest and pointing to the sky before being greeted by a mob of RailCats in the dugout.

The win was not yet in hand for Triana, though. The bottom of the ninth inning began with a Brennan Metzger single, just the fourth RailCat hit. He moved to second on a Jeremy Hamilton bunt. Jose Sermo was intentionally walked before the T-Bones brought in reliever Jared Messer to face Tillman Pugh. Pugh hit a towering shot to left field that was wide of the foul pole by just a few feet. He eventually flew out to deep center field, allowing the two runners to advance on the sacrifice. Kansas City then elected to intentionally walk Jose Gonzalez, who had the game-winning RBI two nights ago.

Gary SouthShore manager Greg Tagert turned to his bench and pinch-hit EJ Devarie for Randy Santiesteban. Devarie is the regular second baseman and this was just Santiesteban's second professional game. Devarie worked the count to 3-1 before hitting a line drive over the head of right fielder Robby Kuzdale to win the game.

The crowd of 3,649 fans was energetic the whole night and gave a standing ovation for the Cats as they dogpiled near the pitchers mound. Both Triana and Devarie received Gatorade showers and shaving cream to the head during the celebratory post-game interview.

The historic night wraps up an entertaining series that included a game-saving play at the plate in a 3-2 RailCats win. Tonight's win caps off a quality homestand in which the team went 5-2.

The next RailCat game is tomorrow night at 6:05 against in Wichita against the Wingnuts. You can catch the action starting at 5:40 on 95.9 WEFM and online at railcatsbaseball.com.
