Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - Jon Link tossed the first complete game of the season for the Wichita Wingnuts as they cruised past the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-1 in the opener of a three-game set Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

After allowing a hit in each of the first three innings, Link (2-2) settled in, starting a string of 11 batters in a row retired by inducing a double play. The righty cruised through the RailCats (7-9) lineup in the middle innings, and did not allow a runner past first until the seventh.

In that frame, Gary led off with back-to-back doubles to score their lone run of the night, but Link recovered with another double play. The righty surrendered a pair of hits in the ninth as well, but slammed the door to finish off his sixth career complete game.

With Link dominating on the hill, the Wingnuts (6-9) seemed in control the entire way once they took the lead for the first time in the second. Three of the first four picked up knocks in the frame with Brent Dean's base hit providing the first two runs of the ball game.

An inning later, Wichita added another on an RBI single by T.J. Mittelstaedt, who collected his team-leading 12th RBI of the campaign.

Christian Stringer added an RBI in the fourth, before the Wingnuts capped off the night's scoring in the seventh. Brent Clevlen knocked in a run with a single, and two batters later Dustin Geiger followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 6-1.

The Wingnuts and RailCats continue their three-game set Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita will send veteran southpaw Anthony Capra (0-0, 3.18) to the mound, while the RailCats will counter with right-hander Charle Rosario (1-1, 4.57). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
