OTTAWA - Sasha Chmelevski scored five goals to propel the Ottawa 67's to a 6-3 victory Monday over the North Bay Battalion in a spirited Ontario Hockey League game.

Chmelevski set a record for the most goals by a player against the Battalion, with Tye Felhaber contributing the other before a Family Day matinee crowd of 5,078. Goaltender Michael DiPietro made eight saves as the Troops managed a season-low 11 shots.

Ottawa improved its won-lost-extended record to 44-9-5 for 93 points atop the East Division and Eastern Conference. The 67's, who are 27-2-1 at home, have won five straight games and are 14-0-1 in their last 15.

Harrison Caines had one goal and one assist, while Brandon Coe and Luke Moncada, the latter shorthanded, each scored a goal for North Bay. Starting goaltender Christian Propp surrendered the six goals on 40 shots before Christian Purboo took over for the third period, producing 11 saves.

The Battalion, which lost 4-3 in overtime at home Sunday to the Mississauga Steelheads, is 25-26-5 for 55 points, fourth in the Central Division and seventh in the conference.

Chmelevski, who has 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points in 46 games, scored the only goal of the first period at 9:02, intercepting an attempted clearing pass by Theo Calvas and darting down the right side to beat Propp to the glove side.

Chmelevski seized the puck in the neutral zone, wove around defenders and jammed the puck past Propp's left pad on another unassisted effort at 6:01 of the second period.

Coe, scoring for a fourth consecutive game, responded 1:05 later when he cashed a Calvas rebound and then dropped Kody Clark, sparking a melee. Coe and Merrick Rippon fought, with both drawing majors and Coe a roughing minor, while Calvas and Ottawa's Quinn Yule were called for roughing.

Coe left for the dressing room and was seen on the video screens gesturing to fans. When he returned later, first going to the Battalion bench and then to the penalty box, it was to two choruses of boos.

Chmelevski made it 3-1 at 10:11 when he skated behind the net and emerged from the right side, appearing to backhand the puck off a defender, either Zack Malik or Mason Primeau.

Felhaber scored what proved to be the winner unassisted at 11:21, taking the puck at the blue line and snapping a low drive to the glove side from the mid slot. Felhaber leads the OHL scoring race with 55 goals and 43 assists for 98 points in 58 games.

Chmelevski struck again 33 seconds later, converting a Lucas Chiodo pass from behind the goal line.

Penalty killer Moncada scored at 15:24, chipping a Caines pass on a two-on-one rush past DiPietro from the left lip of the crease. The Battalion was shorthanded after Luke Burghardt, who crosschecked Nikita Okhotyuk in kind in retaliation, fought the Russian import, with referees Sean Reid and Josh Schein seemingly oblivious to the original infraction.

Chmelevski collected his fifth goal at 18:45, converting the rebound of a Sam Bitten shot on which Propp made a stellar save.

Rookie Caines completed the scoring with his sixth goal of the season at 15:35 of the third period, taking a pass from Patrick Brown and driving down the left wing to beat DiPietro low to the far side.

The Battalion opens a three-game road trip with a visit to the Sarnia Sting at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.

BATTALION BULLETS: The Battalion went 1-3-0 against Ottawa this season, the win coming in a 4-3 decision Oct. 3 at North Bay ... Justin Brazeau played his 256th game, tying Dylan Blujus for 10th place in Battalion history. Brazeau, who was held without a point, has 115 goals and 100 assists for 215 points, tied with Luke Lynes for sixth place in franchise annals ... Brad Chenier left the game after being struck in the head, without a penalty call, by Ottawa's Noel Hoefenmayer in the fifth minute of the middle period ... North Bay had three shots on goal in each of the first two periods, matching a season low recorded twice previously... The Battalion didn't have a power play in the game. Ottawa went 0-for-3 with the man advantage ... The 67's committed two blatant holding-the-stick infractions, one in each of the first two periods, without being penalized ... The Battalion was without Travis Mailhot, Daniel Walker, Kurtis Evans and Mitchell Russell, who has missed the last two games with a sore hip ... Chmelevski, a 19-year-old resident of Northville, Mich., was a first-round pick, 10th overall, by Sarnia in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. He played 29 games for the Sting in 2015-16 before being traded to Ottawa. In 206 career games, Chmelevski has 96 goals and 107 assists for 203 points ... Felhaber has two goals and five assists for seven points in the last five games.
