Ninth Inning Rally Spoiled

After rallying to tie the game in the ninth inning the Calgary Vipers were defeated 9-6 in 12 innings by the Chico Outlaws at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down two runs heading into the final frame the Vipers forced extra innings by tying the game when they were down to their final strike of the contest. With the loss Calgary's record drops to 10-5 in the second half and 33-25 overall.

Claudio Galva (2-2) received the loss after giving up three runs in his second inning of work. Jorge Vasquez threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen without giving up a hit while Jordan Muir also tossed an inning and a third without giving up a hit or run.

Chico scored first in the top of the third when Mitch Einertson doubled, JJ Sherrill singled, Einertson scored on a wild pitch, and Mark Samuelson singled in one for a 2-0 lead.

Calgary cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the fourth inning when Brent Metheny hit his eighth home run of the season.

The Outlaws increased their lead in the fifth frame as Sherrill walked, Maikel Jova reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brent Metheny, Mike Rose doubled in one run, a second run scored on a throwing error by right fielder Jonny Kaplan, and Samuelson also doubled in a tally for a 5-1 advantage.

Sherrll cranked a solo home run for Chico in the sixth inning for a 6-1 lead.

The Vipers got back into the game in the bottom of the frame when Drew Miller walked, Kevin Price collected a run batted in double, Luis Taveras singled in one, and after walks to Caonabo Cosme and Jonny Kaplan an error allowed Taveras to score for a 6-4 game.

Calgary rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kaplan doubled, Metheny singled in one, and with two outs and two strikes Miller doubled in the tying run for a 6-6 score.

Chico went back in front in the top of the 12th when Pascual Del Real singled, Garrett Holleran laid down a sacrifice bunt, Einertson singled in the go-ahead run, Jova singled, Rose walked to load the bases, and Samuelson knocked in two insurance runs with a base hit for a 9-6 advantage.

The Vipers conclude this three-game series with the first half champion Chico Outlaws in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Sunday August 1st at 1:35 PM for 9 Inning Giveaway Day where female knuckleballer Eri Yoshida will take to the mound.
