Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Opening up a six-game road trip with game one against the St. George RoadRunners on Friday night, the Victoria Seals returned to Bruce Hurst Field for the first of a three-game series. Handing the ball to left-hander Isaac Hess (3-1) for the start, the Seals matched up against Raymar Diaz (5-6) in the clubs' fourth meeting of the season.
Jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, St. George opened the scoring when a lead-off single from Victor Buttler cashed on an RBI groundout off the bat of Jermy Acey. Answering back with a big top of the second, the Seals took a commanding lead with six runs in their second trip to the plate.
After Josh Arhart was hit by a pitch, Brian Rios doubled and Colin Moro walked to load the bases, Dale Swinford scored a pair of runners with a double to right-centre field, putting Victoria ahead 2-1. Then, after back-to-back singles from Hess and Wilver Perez brought home another pair of runners, a double courtesy of Terrence McClain lifted the Seals to a 6-1 advantage.
Adding to their lead with an RBI double from Perez in the top of the third, the Seals carried a 7-1 lead over the RoadRunners into the fifth inning of play. That's when St. George's bats came to life, however, using two straight doubles from C.J. Lang and Yosvany Almario to pull within four. Acey, Henry Calderon and Brett Flowers then rattled off three consecutive base hits, cashing in another pair of runners to make it a 7-5 game.
The home side then drew even in the bottom half of the sixth, putting together a walk to Diaz, a single from Buttler and a base hit off the bat of Lang to chase Hess from the mound before Almario ripped a run-scoring triple to right field to tie the game 7-7.
With two scoreless innings in the books, St. George capitalized on their chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. After Calderon drew a one-out walk against Victoria reliever P.J. Bevis and Flowers put the runner in scoring position with a single, Jason Dellaero delivered the game-winning single off of Aaron Easton to hand the RoadRunners a dramatic 8-7 win over the Seals.
Jose Obispo collected his first win on the season following a scoreless ninth inning on the mound, while P.J. Bevis took the loss for the Seals. The top of the order provided the offensive punch for the RoadRunners, with Victor Buttler, C.J. Lang and Yosvany Almario combining for 9 hits, 5 runs and 4 RBI's while Wilver Perez notched two hits and pulled within three of a new Golden Baseball League stolen base record in a losing effort for Victoria.
