July 31, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. - Manny Ayala became the first pitcher in the GBL to reach nine wins on the season with a complete game victory over the Edmonton Capitals, 6-2, at Goodwin Field in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Ayala (9-0) struck out six Capitals without surrendering a walk while allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of work (doubleheaders in minor league baseball comprise two seven-inning games).
Edmonton struck on a Cliff Brumbaugh bloop to centerfield that landed between three Flyers to score Enrique Cruz from second base for an early 1-0 lead. OC tied the game in the bottom of the first when Steve Boggs, who reached base on an error, scored from third on a Sergio Pedroza sacrifice fly.
Catcher Alex Jamieson broke the tie in the second inning, tripling down the right field line to score David Harris and Tyler Keeble, and Boggs singled home Jamieson for a 4-1 Flyers lead.
Edmonton's Cliff Brumbaugh pulled the Capitals within two with his league-leading 18th homerun of the year to lead off the fourth inning, but Edmonton would not threaten again as Ayala would retire 12 of the next 14 batters to finish the game.
Boggs finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles, and Harris and Keeble also had multi-hit games.
Capitals starter Chris Little (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in five innings of work, collecting six strike outs of his own.
Orange County and Edmonton conclude this series with the second game of the doubleheader tonight at Goodwin Field.
