Flyers Soar Past Caps In Extras

July 31, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Fullerton, CA - The Edmonton Capitals must have been a little bit grumpy from flying down to Orange County on Friday and then having to play a game the same night, because three Caps were ejected from the contest against the O.C. Flyers, who eventually won 3-2 in extra innings.

After playing 14 of their previous 18 games at home, the Caps headed out on a 10-game road trip on Friday, starting with three against the Flyers. The trip didn't exactly start off on a positive note, as manager Brent Bowers, catcher Nick Valdez and centre fielder Ryan Stevenson were all ejected from the eventual defeat for arguing balls and strikes.

The Caps also lost the game in the 10th inning in all too familiar fashion as of late. Closer Chad Blackwell has pitched three times in the last week, and all three times he's surrendered runs to lose the game for Edmonton.

On Friday, the teams were tied 2-2 until pinch hitter Julian Benavidez drove in the winning run with a double off Blackwell. Starter Daryl Arreola went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits, while Yosandy Ibanez threw two innings of perfect relief leading up to Blackwell, whose record dropped to 3-5.

Left fielder Larry Bigbie continued to produce for the Caps, driving in one of their two runs on the night with a double for his seventh RBI in his last three games. Right fielder Tom Collaro drove in their other run on Friday with a double as well. Stevenson and Steve Brown scored the two runs.

As if Friday wasn't busy enough for the Caps (7-4 in Golden Baseball League second half), with travelling and playing a game, they must play the Flyers twice more on Saturday night in a double-header. They then fly to Maui on Sunday and play seven games with Na Koa Ikaika through Aug. 8. They return home to face the Chico Outlaws on Aug. 10.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
