Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - After being no-hit for five innings by Portland's Drake Britton, Trenton's offense erupted for nine runs on ten hits in the sixth as the Thunder drubbed the Sea Dogs, 9-2, in the opener of a three-game series before 7,095 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park Friday night.
Jose Pirela's collected a double and a three-run home run in the 13-batter rally as the Thunder (37-35) earned their fourth consecutive victory. Starter Scottie Allen (1-0) tossed six strong innings and became the third Trenton pitcher this week to earn a win in his Double-A debut.
Portland led 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth and Britton (6-6) had allowed only one baserunner to that point. It all changed quickly in the sixth, when Trenton collected RBI hits from Slade Heathcott (triple), Tyler Austin (single), Carmen Angelini (two-run single) and Andrew Clark (double) to take a 6-1 lead and chase Britton.
Pirela, who led off the inning with a double, then batted against reliever Chris Balcom-Miller with two runners on and crushed a three-run bomb (6) to left to make the score 9-1. That was followed by singles from Jeff Farnham and Ramon Flores to make it nine consecutive Thunder batters to collect a hit.
Allen dueled with Britton pitch-for-pitch early on. He allowed a first-inning run on Michael Almanzar's RBI single, but settled in and permitted only one hit after the first. Allen was charged with a total of three hits and one run while striking out two and walking three.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Mikey O'Brien (4-2, 3.68) expected to start for the Thunder against Sea Dogs knuckleball Drake Britton (6-5, 3.08).
Limited tickets are available through the Thunder box office at (609) 394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
