ST. PAUL, MN- The Sioux Falls Canaries broke out their big sticks in the series finale against the St. Paul Saints, defeating their North division rivals by the final score of 11-4 on Sunday night at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul.
Saints starter Jeff Shields made his first start with the Saints since returning from the Mexican League. The right-hander looked good over his first four innings, allowing one run on four hits. The Canaries figured out Shields in the fifth inning, exploding for nine runs on five hits. The big inning was capped off by back-to back home runs from David Bergin and Cameron Monger.
Bergin's three-run blast was his 14th of the season, and helped the first baseman break out of a late season slump. Bergin was 0-for-11 in the series before sending the rocket shot over the bullpen beyond the left-field wall. The Tampa, FL native finished the night going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
Ethan Chapman also had a good night for the Birds, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. The Speedy outfielder picked up two of his three RBI on his second at-bat of the 5th inning, driving home BJ Guinn and Aaron Owen to cap of the big nine run inning.
Canaries starting pitcher Dylan Thompson had a good day on the mound. The right-hander held the dangerous Saints offense to four runs on nine hits while striking out four batters over seven innings on the way to his third win of the season.
The Canaries continue their week-long roadtrip on Monday night, when they open up a four-game series against the Gary Southshore Railcats at the U.S. Steel Yard. Canaries LHP Joe Bircher (3-6, 2.63 ERA) will take the mound in the series opener. Fans can listen to all of the action starting at 6:45 PM on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
The Canaries return to the Birdcage on August 19th to battle the Lincoln Saldogs in the opening game of a three-game weekend series. It will be Girl Scouts night, and the final Friday Night All-Star Fireworks display of the 2016 season.
