Home Runs Power RedHawks to Game and Series Victory

FARGO, ND- Kes Carter and Keury De La Cruz both hit home runs for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-39) in a 5-4 win over the Gary SoutShore RailCats (39-41).

The victory was the RedHawks' third straight and helped them to a 3-1 series victory over the RailCats. Fargo hit seven home runs over the four games at Cameron Outdoor Field. The RailCats are now 2-9 in August.

Frank Martinez had another good game for Gary SouthShore, going 3-4 with a home run. The slugger went 12-16 with eight RBI and three runs in the four-game series.

For the third straight game, the RailCats grabbed a 1-0 lead after their first at bat. Reggie Wilson walked and was putout in a Chase Harris fielder's choice. Then, Martinez singled and Alex Crosby pushed Harris home on a base hit.

Carter homered in the RedHawks' first at bat of the game to tie it up. Fargo extended their lead in the next inning. KD Kang led off the bottom of the 2 nd with a single and came around to score two batters later on a Brian Humphries double. Ryan Wagner made it consecutive two-baggers in the next at bat and scored Humphries to give the RedHawks a 3-1 advantage.

De La Cruz hit his blast, a solo shot, in the 3rd inning to make it 4-1. RailCats starting pitcher Taylor Black lost his control some in the 4th and walked Humphries before hitting Wagner with a pitch. Carter drove in Humphries with a single making the score 5-1.

The RailCats cut into the lead in the top of the 6th inning. Wilson led off with a walk and stole second base. Then, Martinez hit his 10th home run of the season cut Fargo's lead to 5-3.

Gary SouthShore tried to mount a comeback in the top of the 9th inning but fell one run short. Closer Colton Reavis entered for the RedHawks and quickly retired the first two RailCats. EJ Devarie hit a two-out double and scored on a John Holland base hit. Andy DeJesus flew out to end the threat and the game.

Brian Ernst earned the win for Fargo after going 7.2 innings. He allowed just three runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters. Reavis earned the save and Black was charged with loss.

The RailCats continue their chase for the playoffs with a seven-game homestand beginning tomorrow night. First pitch against the Sioux Falls Canaries is at 7:10 PM and coverage begins at 6:45 PM.
