Maryland NightHawks News Release
Rockville, MD -Randy Gill scored 16 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter in his Nighthawks home debut, to lead the Maryland Nighthawks to a 119-111 victory over the Wilmington Sea Dawgs on Saturday Night.
Maryland jumped out to an early 17-6 lead with 5:24 left in the first quarter and then made another run to take a 33-17 lead with 10:50 left in the second period. Wilmington however would outscore the Nighthawks 40-27 to cut the deficit to six heading into halftime trailing 57-51.
Wilmington opened the third period with the energy they had been lacking during the first half. The Sea Dawgs took their first lead of the game with 7:56 left in the third quarter on a Charlie Ward (former Nighthawk) free throw.
In Maryland's previous two games, the Nighthawks built double-digit leads heading into the fourth quarter but were unable to hold onto the lead. Tonight, the Nighthawks entered the fourth quarter down 85-82, but outscored Wilmington 37-26 in the final period to pick up their first home victory of the season.
Gill hit three 3-pointers, including one on a 3D possession with 6:44 remaining, during a three-minute span midway through the fourth quarter to help the Nighthawks overcome a fourth quarter deficit. Andrew Washington added 23 points and 7 rebounds and Dennis Edwards also topped the 20-point mark, scoring 21 points on 9 of 19 shooting.
Former Nighthawk Lee Cook led the Sea Dawgs with 26 points and 11 rebounds and Cedric McGinnis, nephew of NBA great George McGinnis, also scored 26 points on 9 of 16 shooting.
Seven players scored in double digits for the Nighthawks, including Anton Jenifer (17 points), Landy Thompson (11 points), with Barry Mitchell and Mark Karcher each scoring 10 points respectively.
The Nighthawks improved to 4-5 while Wilmington dropped to 4-2 on the season. Wilmington's two losses on the season have been against Maryland.
The Nighthawks return to action this afternoon when they visit the Richmond Ballerz at 4:05 pm, concluding a stretch where they played three games in four nights.
