York Revolution News Release
(Bridgewater, NJ) - In a matchup of first place teams, the York Revolution methodically battled back from an early deficit, but it was the Somerset Patriots who pulled far enough way to hand the Revs a 10-8 defeat on Tuesday night in front of 4,872 fans at TD Bank Ballpark in the series opener. The Revs (29-22) see their first place lead in the Freedom Division trimmed to two games over Sugar Land, while remaining three ahead of Lancaster. York will look to rebound with two games remaining on its current road trip.
The game took on a rather tame beginning with York leading 1-0 after two innings on an Alfredo Marte home run to left in the top of the second.
The Revs missed a chance to add to the lead, leaving the bases loaded in the third, as Somerset swung both momentum and the score by scoring four times in its half of the inning, all with two outs. Aharon Eggleston singled home the first run, before Eric Farris drove an RBI double to the right-center gap, and Brad Snyder cracked a two-run opposite field home run, giving the Patriots a 4-1 lead.
Somerset nearly blew the game open in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. York starter Kelvin De La Cruz only bent to allow one run, however, as Mycal Jones lined a sac fly to center before De La Cruz induced a comeback 1-6-3 double play from Eggleston to limit the damage.
The Revs would put the tying run on base in the fifth, at the plate in the seventh, on-deck in the eighth, and again on base in the ninth inning, but never could come up with the equalizer.
Jason Repko reached on an error to begin the fifth before Joel Guzman took a walk. Andres Perez rapped an RBI double down the left field line, and Bryan Pounds did likewise with an RBI double to right, bringing York within 5-3. After a mound visit, Patriots starter Darin Gorski (4-2) preserved his chance at the win, striking out the final three hitters with the tying runs in scoring position to cap five laborious innings after 116 pitches.
Somerset recouped one of those runs on a two-out RBI double by Matt Fields in the bottom of the fifth, extending its lead to 6-3.
York threatened again in the seventh as Guzman led off with a double to right-center and scored on a Pounds single to left, pulling within 6-4. Reliever Ryan Reid entered to strike out pinch-hitter Telvin Nash, however, to end that threat.
The Patriots delivered one final punch in the bottom of the seventh with their second four-run inning of the game. Things started on the wrong foot as Farris reached on a strikeout-wild pitch against reliever Scott Rice. After a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out, Fields served a two-run single toward the right field line. Yovan Gonzalez then drove in a run on a swinging bunt hit. The final run came home in unearned fashion as reliever Luis Perdomo covered first but missed the throw on an attempted 3-6-1 double play.
The Revs were undeterred, scoring two runs in each of the final two innings to again make things interesting. Guzman ripped an RBI single to right-center with two outs in the eighth, and Isaias Tejeda crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the Somerset lead to 10-6. Reliever Jeremy McBryde entered to record an inning-ending strikeout with the tying run on deck, but the Revs would mount yet another rally off McBryde in the ninth.
Marte led off the ninth with a bloop single to right-center. Josh Wilson followed with a one-out RBI double to left, bringing the score to 10-7. Michael Rockett then bunted for a hit to get the tying run to the plate. With two outs, Repko kept the game going with an RBI single to center, and then stood at first representing the tying run. McBryde rebounded to strike out Guzman, however, putting an end to the persistent comeback attempt and picking up his second save.
The Revs pounded out 13 hits, but were guilty of a season-high-tying 13 runners stranded and 15 strikeouts. Perez led the attack with a 3-for-5 game including a pair of doubles, notching his second straight three-hit performance. Guzman went 2-for-4 and reached base four times. Pounds was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Marte also tallied multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with the home run.
Somerset took advantage of eight walks from Revs pitchers. Fields led the Patriot offense with three RBI.
De La Cruz (3-6) suffered the loss against his former team, charged with six runs in 4.2 innings. The lefty slips to 0-3 against the Patriots, while having gone 3-3 against the rest of the league.
Notes: Tejeda singled in the top of the third, extending his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games, now the Revs' longest of the season. York pitchers allowed 10 runs for the first time since May 16 at Lancaster. York and Somerset are now tied for the league's best record at 29-22. Each of York's final five offensive innings ended with strikeouts. Perez' RBI in the fifth was his franchise record 275th in a York uniform. The Revs fall to 3-5 against the Patriots this season, 0-4 at TD Bank Ballpark. York will look to even the series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. as righty Matt Neil (1-0, 4.13) makes the start, opposite Patriots lefty Rudy Owens, making his season debut. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
