(Waldorf, MD) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-30) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (18-31) 1-0 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday night in the opener of a three game midweek series and the first of six straight games on the road. Bridgeport has now won a season-high four consecutive games and seven of their last nine overall as the pitching staff notches their first shutout of the 2016 season.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (4-2) earned the victory after firing seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while walking one and striking out four. The right-hander registered his fourth quality start of the season, throwing a total of 93 pitches and 58 strikes. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres (4-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering just one unearned run on five hits in six innings of work, walking two and striking out five. Taylor Thompson retired all three batters he faced in the bottom half of the ninth inning to pick up his team-leading fourth save of the campaign.

Bridgeport scored the only run of the game in the top half of the fourth inning against Burres when Endy Chavez led off the frame with an infield single, and then advanced to second on a throwing error by Eric Garcia, his tenth miscue overall, tops on the Blue Crabs roster. Burres looked like he may get out of the inning unscathed as he induced Welington Dotel to fly out and then threw out Jose Cuevas on a slowly hit ground ball to the right of the southpaw which he fielded cleanly for out number two. Burres then proceeded to give up an opposite-field run-scoring single to Jonathan Galvez after he fell behind in the count, and Chavez raced home from second going on contact and scored in front of a high throw made by right fielder Jamar Walton to give Bridgeport a 1-0 advantage, one they would never relinquish.

Southern Maryland threatened against Albaladejo in the home half of the fourth inning on back-to-back one out singles by Walton and Angel Sanchez, but the home team was kept off the scoreboard when Albaladejo stranded the tying-run in scoring position after Angel Flores fouled out to Galvez at first and Garcia struck out swinging to end the rally, beginning a string of nine batters in a row retired by Albaladejo. He would finish his night strong, getting D'Arby Myers to fly out to Dotel in the seventh stranding Flores at third base. Eric Niesen pitched a clean eighth inning while striking out a pair, but then allowed a leadoff single to Walton to open up the bottom of the ninth. That brought on Thompson with the tying-run at first and the winning run at the plate. Sanchez popped out to Galvez in an unsuccessful bunt attempt, and then Thompson retired Flores and Garcia on a pair of outs caught by left fielder Anthony Giansanti to secure the victory. Galvez led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits.

Bridgeport continues their series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday Night, and return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, June 20th when they welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers to kick off a seven-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M. It will be Latin Heritage Night, and the first collector pin giveaway of the season will take place.
