Mississippi Braves News Release
Jacksonville, FL - Behind a strong start from Justin Nicolino and a slew of early runs, the Jacksonville Suns came away with a 6-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Saturday night at Bragan Field.
It was the first game the M-Braves (28-21; 67-52) lost in the series after picking up the first three games, setting them back to a two game deficit in third place in the second half South Division race.
Nicolino (11-3) earned his league leading 11th win by firing six shutout innings on six hits and three strikeouts, extending his scoreless streak to 24 innings.
Jacksonville (30-19; 66-53) jumped early on M-Braves starter Ryan Weber (5-5). Shortstop Austin Nola doubled to lead off the first and scored when JT Realmuto singled him home.
The Suns put up three more in the second. Ryan Rieger doubled and scored on a Nicolino single. Nola singled to put two men on and Realmuto came through again with a two-run double and a 4-0 lead.
In the third, Yosmany Guerra hit an 0-2 pitch over the right-field wall for his first double-A homer, a solo shot to pull away to a 5-0 advantage.
Weber suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out one over three innings. Reliever Jorge Reyes allowed an earned run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings, and Ryne Harper pitched a perfect 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
Mississippi missed some early chances to jump on Nicolino, putting men at the corners in the first and loading the bases in the second but stranding eight runners in the contest.
Jacksonville got another insurance run in the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Terrence Dayleg singled, Nola doubled for the second time and an Austin Barnes sacrifice line to left scored Dayleg for a 6-0 lead.
The Braves got their lone run in the seventh off reliever and Southern Miss product Collin Cargill. Kyle Wren legged out a triple to the right field corner with two outs, and Mycal Jones drove him home with a double down the third base line to make it 6-1.
The M-Braves look to take the series finale on Sunday at Bragan Field, with right-hander Mitch Atkins (5-0, 4.20) slated to get the start opposite Suns right-hander Dustin Mosely (1-1, 2.84). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM CT from Bragan Field.
