Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears swept a doubleheader, winning two games against the Tennessee Smokies in front of a large crowd of more than 4,000 at Hank Aaron Stadium Friday night. In game one of the twin bill, Mobile thrashed Tennessee en route to an 8-1 victory. In game two, the BayBears pitchers again snuffed the Smokies bats, winning 4-1. The 4,128 at "The Hank" made up the BayBears fifth largest home attendance this season.

With the win, Mobile improved to 70-45 which remains the best record in the Southern League while the BayBears' 28-18 second-half record has them tied with the Jacksonville Suns for first place in the Southern League South Division second-half standings.

Nate Samson sparked the BayBears in game one with a solo home run in the first inning. At the time, it was Samson's third homer of the season. All three homers came in the first inning of a game this year.

RHP Aaron Blair (3-1) pitched well enough to earn his third win in just his fourth Double-A start. The righty allowed just the one run on five hits over five full innings on the mound, walking three and striking out three. However the BayBears starting pitcher did just as much damage with his bat, breaking a 1-1 tie with his first career home run, a solo shot to left in the bottom of the third inning.

Samson added another run in the third with his second home run in as many at bats to push the BayBears lead to 3-1.

Mobile pulled away the very next frame, scoring five runs highlighted by Jon Griffin's solo home run. The long ball was Griffin's team-high 15th of the season and the first home run the BayBears 2014 All-Star had hit since June 22 at home against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

In game two, the BayBear bats wasted no time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gerson Montilla drove in two runs with a two-run double. Brandon Drury's RBI double in the fifth inning capped the Mobile scoring, give the BayBears a 4-1 lead.

RHP A.J. Schugel improved to 5-2, earning the win after limiting Tennessee to one run on six hits in five full innings. RHP R.J. Hively worked a scoreless sixth inning while notching his league-leading 13th hold and RHP Kaleb Fleck recorded the final three outs in the seventh inning to pick up his 15th save of the season.

Mobile and Tennessee continue their series with game four of the five-game set scheduled for 6:05 PM Saturday night.
