Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, shared today that alumnus Nic Petan has signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Minnesota Wild during the opening hours of NHL free agency.

Petan, 27, puts pen to paper with the Wild after a productive season with the Abbotsford Canucks where he produced 12 goals and 32 assists in 37 games. His 44 points ranked him third on the team in scoring. The seven-year pro also skated in 18 NHL games with Vancouver last year, notching two assists. Petan has played in 338 professional games between the NHL and AHL with the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks organizations.

During his time in Portland, the Delta, B.C. native played four seasons with the Winterhawks from 2011 to 2015 and was named their team captain for the 2014-15 campaign. Petan currently ranks fifth in Winterhawks all-time scoring with 358 points (110G-248A) in 252 games and holds the WHL record of 88 playoff games played.

The former first-round WHL Bantam selection helped the Winterhawks win their third Ed Chynoweth Cup during the 2012-13 season, the same year he co-led the CHL 120 points. Petan was named a WHL Western Conference All-Star three times during his junior career in the Rose City.

On the international stage, Petan led Canada with 11 points in seven tournament games during the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and captured a gold medal in the process. He was originally selected in the second round (#43 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft by Winnipeg.
