Niagara IceDogs Donate $15,000 to Local Charities

Niagara, Ontario - The Niagara IceDogs have announced that $15,000 has been raised through the live auction of the team's third annual Ugly Christmas Sweater jersey. The recipients of the auction funds raised are Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold, and United Way Niagara; the IceDogs have covered all the costs associated with jersey/sock production. The Niagara IceDogs wore the specialty jerseys on Saturday, December 7th in a 6-5 win over the Sarnia Sting.

"We are so proud to be donating such a significant amount of money to two beneficiaries this holiday season! Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold, and United Way Niagara provide so much good to our community, especially during the holiday season. The work they do to provide our communities most vulnerable members with support and resources is incredible." Said Bill Burke, Owner of the Niagara IceDogs. "We have had a longstanding relationship with both charities, and we are proud to continue supporting them. To have received such strong support from our own fanbase for these local organizations shows what great work they do in our community."

IceDogs Captain Akil Thomas, and Alternate Captain Philip Tomasino's jerseys were auctioned for $1250.00. Second year Swiss forward Kyen Sopa's jersey was auctioned for the second most, $1200.00. Minnesota Wild prospect Ivan Lodnia's jersey was auctioned for $800.00.

Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold will be receiving $10,000.00 from the jersey auction.

"Community Care is extremely grateful to have been the recipients of the results of the "Not so" Ugly Christmas Sweater Auction!" said Chief Executive Officer, Betty-Lou Souter. "The monies will go a long way in helping us create the Magic of Christmas for those registered with us this holiday."

United Way Niagara will be receiving $5,000.00 from the jersey auction.

"United Way is humbled by the generosity of the community. To see an arena filled with people supporting the community in so many ways was just amazing. We are so thankful for our partnership with the Niagara IceDogs. Funds raised will have a huge impact, especially over the holidays, helping put food on the tables of families, keep a roof over their head and support those living with chronic mental illnesses." Said Frances Hallworth, Executive Director of United Way Niagara.
