NHL Prospect Chouinard Signed

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls and goaltender Mathieu Chouinard have agreed to terms for the 2004-05 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chouinard, 24, joins the Gulls after attaining a 2.25 Goals-Against-Average over the 2003-04 season with three teams, including an appearance with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings. He spent the majority of last year with the American Hockey League's Manchester Monarchs, earning four shutouts and 428 saves while posting a 2.25 GAA in 22 games.

Chouinard is no stranger to the ECHL, having played 15 games with the Peoria Rivermen in 2002-2003 and making three appearances for the Reading Royals in 2004. His ECHL career stats include three shutouts and thirteen wins, as well as 436 saves and a 2.14 GAA

The 6-foot-1-inch, native of Laval, Quebec was originally drafted as the 15th choice of the first round by the Ottawa Senators in the1998 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft in 2000 and was selected again by Ottawa, this time in the second round with the 45th pick. Chouinard has achieved a 53-28-3 record and a 2.40 G.A.A over a four-year professional career that began with the Grand Rapids Griffins (playing for the now-defunct IHL in 2000-01). Prior to turning pro, he spent four years in the QMJHL.

The Gulls open their second season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 22 in Long Beach and open their home schedule Saturday, Oct. 23 against Fresno.
