Newton drives in four in Whitecaps win

SOUTH BEND, IN - Jordan Newton went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and four RBI to lead the Whitecaps to an 8-5 victory in South Bend.Newton hit a bases loaded two-run double to the wall in left to tie the game, 2-2 in the fourth inning. With the score tied, 3-3 in the top of the fifth, Newton put West Michigan in front for good with a two-run triple. South Bend tallied two runs in the first inning off Whitecaps starter Mauricio Robles who walked two, hit a batter, allowed a single and threw a wild pitch in the first. Robles worked three innings and came away with a no decision. Following Newton's double in the fourth, Kody Kaiser put the Whitecaps on top, 3-2 with an RBI single to drive in Roger Tomas. The Silver Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, 3-3 on an RBI single by Mike Mee, who went 3-for-4 in the game.Kalamazoo native Andrew Hess allowed three runs (2 ER) in 3.1 innings of relief for West Michigan, but earned his first professional victory. Rudy Darrow pitched 2.2 innings - his longest outing of the year - to pick up his fourth save of the season. Jordan Norberto was the starting pitcher for South Bend. He struck out six in the first three innings with the minimum nine batters faced, but allowed a total of five runs in 4.1 innings and took the loss. Kaiser and Silver Hawks center fielder Evan Frey each had two hits. Whitecaps newcomers Alex Avila and Andy Dirks each tallied his first professional hit. Avila singled to lead off the eighth then scored on a two-run single by Dirk, which helped put the game away.
