June 26, 2022 - Pioneer League (PL)
Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

Missoula MT - The Missoula PaddleHeads looked to be well on their way to another win on Sunday afternoon leading by a sizable margin for the first six innings on Sunday afternoon. The Great Voyagers had other ideas however, cutting a sizable PaddleHeads lead to just 1 run in the seventh inning. Jayson Newman had been relentless in action in the series spearheading a pair of PaddleHeads wins. The 'Dead Man' would prove to have another trick up his sleeve.

After hitting his third home run of the series, Newman's number would be called one more time in the ninth inning to close things out on the hill. For the fourth time this season, Newman would do just that pitching a clean ninth to give Missoula a 12-9 win over Great Falls. Newman has hit at least 1 home run in every game that he has earned a save in on the mound this season.

The PaddleHeads would take control of the game in the early going thanks to a 7 run rally in the fourth inning. Missoula would tally 6 hits total in the frame. RBI triples from both Brandon Riley, and Kamron Willman would fuel the flames after a double from Cameron Thompson. Newman would also drive home a pair in the inning with a two run homer to right that made the score 9-2.

Newman continues to lead the Pioneer League with 13 home runs on the year and finished 1-for-3 Sunday. Riley would finish the contest 2-for-4 and Willman was 1-for-4.

Trailing by 8 going into the top of the seventh, the Voyagers would stun the Missoula crowd with a 7 run rally of their own to cut the PaddleHeads advantage to just 1 run. Breydon Daniel would lead off the inning with a home run to the deepest part of the ballpark in right center to get things started. After a 2-run single from Lukas Polanko, Adam Oviedo would deliver the big blow in the inning hitting a grand slam to cut Missoula's lead to 10-9. Despite the big push, Missoula would find a way to hold Great Falls scoreless the rest of the way to hang on for a win.

Missoula would get on the board twice more coming down the stretch to give themselves some breathing room. In the seventh, Jared Akins would give the PaddleHeads a 2 run lead with a single up the middle. In the next half inning, Thompson would come through in a clutch spot with 2-outs by singling home a run to make the score 12-9. Thompson finished the day 3-for-5 and Akins was 2-for-3.

Sam Hellinger did well to calm the waters out of the pen after the Voyagers huge rally in the seventh in 1 '..." innings of work. The Seattle native would strike out 4 in those innings and did not allow a single base runner. The work from Hellinger, and Newman in the ninth would

preserve a win for Starter Rafael Monsion who allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings of action to earn the win on the hill.

The PaddleHeads (20-9) remained 2 games clear of the Idaho Falls Chukars (18-11) in the Pioneer League North race in the first half. Missoula will now have two days to rest prior to a 3 game set opposite Idaho Falls. Game 1 of that series is set for Wednesday evening in the Garden City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. If you can't make it to the game, listen to the action on ESPN Missoula 102.9 F.M.
