San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Stetson Woods and Norwith Gudino, both in their California League debuts, combined to throw eight scoreless innings for the San Jose Giants on Friday night in a 4-0 series-opening win over the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium. The shutout was San Jose's sixth of the season as the Giants (30-25) became the second team in the California League to reach the 30-win mark.
Woods (1-0), who joined San Jose from Extended Spring Training before the game on Friday, fired five scoreless innings with just one hit allowed to pick-up the win. The right-hander walked none, struck out two and retired 15 out of the 16 batters he faced. Woods needed only 44 pitches to complete his five innings of work.
Gudino (3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) kept the Nuts off the scoreboard over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings in his debut. Gudino was added to the Giants' roster from Extended Spring Training on Wednesday. Jeff Burke (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to complete the shutout.
Bryce Johnson (0-for-3, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs with a groundout and a sacrifice fly for San Jose. San Francisco Giants infielder Alen Hanson finished 1-for-4 with a single in the third game of his rehabilitation assignment.
The Giants jumped out early on Friday scoring twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, C.J Hinojosa laced a double down the right field line before taking third on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks to Matt Winn and Dylan Manwaring then loaded the bases before Brandon Van Horn drew a third straight walk to force home a run. Johnson followed by grounding into a fielder's choice to first as Van Horn was forced out, however Winn scored to make it 2-0.
Meanwhile, Woods cruised through four perfect innings to begin his start. He needed only nine pitches in each of the first three innings before an eight-pitch top of the fourth. Modesto finally broke through with a baserunner in the top of the fifth when Nick Zammarelli led off with a sharp single to right, but Woods quickly retired the next three batters to end the inning.
San Jose then extended their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Manwaring led off with a double to the fence in deep right center before taking third on a wild pitch. Van Horn followed with a shallow fly out to right, but Johnson then hit a sacrifice fly to center as Manwaring came home to make it 3-0.
Gudino relieved Woods to begin the top of the sixth and escaped trouble in his first inning of work to keep the lead at three runs. Garrett Kennedy began the frame with a single before Donnie Walton doubled off the right field fence with two outs to put runners on second and third. Gudino though came back to set down Evan White on a routine fly out to right stranding both runners in scoring position.
The Giants capped the scoring for the night with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Heyward led off with a single and promptly stole second. Sandro Fabian then advanced Heyward to third with a groundout. Hinojosa was up next and he hit a grounder behind third that was fielded by Joe Rizzo. Rizzo fired home, but his throw, in an effort to retire Heyward, was late as San Jose pushed their lead to 4-0. Hinojosa, who reached first on the fielder's choice, was credited with an RBI on the play.
Gudino then breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the seventh before pitching around a leadoff single in the eighth. In the ninth, Burke surrendered a leadoff single to Walton, but struck out White, retired Zammarelli on a fly out to left and then induced Luis Liberato to groundout to second to seal the Giants victory.
Nuts starter Orlando Razo (0-1), who was also making his California League debut, suffered the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on four hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out two.
