Newark's Late Heroics Not Enough, Lose 16-12 to Mohawks

The Newark Pilots (15-16) fall to the current number one seed Amsterdam Mohawks (24-6) in their 2011 PGCBL Championship rematch game by the score of 16-12 at Colburn Park, Wednesday night.
The seventh inning was quite an adventure for both teams; a combined 21 runs were scored in the inning that lasted over an hour.
Amsterdam's offense exploded in the top of the seventh, as the team scored 13 runs as the team batted around their lineup twice. After doubling, Jeff Limbaugh (Parkland) eventually scored on throwing error that was committed by the opposing third baseman. Evan Stephens (Wake Forest) later singled, driving in Colby for the score. With the bases loaded, the team was able to work back to back walks. The third baseman Ruby stood out in the colossal inning as he contributed three RBI; one coming from a bases load walk and the last two coming after singling in his second at-bat. The offensive onslaught gave the team a commanding 16-1 lead.
Newark's offense responded with their own offensive outburst, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the inning. The first seven batters of the inning were able to get on base via a base on balls or a single; all seven batters scored in that inning. Jared Watson (Samford), Cash Barker (Texas A&M Kingsville), Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College), Phillip Flach (Samford), Brent Langston (Delta State), Josh Perez (Mississippi College), and Chris Doyle (UC Davis) all had RBIs in the inning. Their surge allowed the team to cut the Mohawk's lead down to 16-9.
The Pilots carried their offense into the bottom of the eighth inning, as they tacked on two more runs to their score. Bostick contributed a RBI single, as he drove in Micah Easterling (UC Davis) for the score. With the combination of a double by Flach and throwing error by the opposing right fielder, Bostick was able to score. Amsterdam's lead after the inning was 16-11.
Newark continued to show they would not go down without a fight. Bostick continuing to be the man put into the clutch situation, provided the team with another RBI hit with two men out; Tyler McDonald (Millersville University) scored on his single. Unfortunately, Newark's persistence came to end as Flach struck out to end the game.
Rocky McCord (Auburn) earned his fourth win of the season for the Mohawks. The right pitched six effective innings as he gave up only one run on two hits while striking out four batters and walking two batters. Austin McAuliffe (NJIT) earned the loss for the Pilots. The lefty pitched six and one-third innings while giving up eight runs, six earned on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked two hitters.
The Pilots will be home for the second day in a row Thursday night, as they host the Oneonta Outlaws at Colburn Park for a game time start of 7:05 p.m. The Mohawks will travel back home to Amsterdam as they will host Watertown at Shuttleworth Park for a game time of 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
