Newark Wins Exhibition Game Against Utica

The Newark Pilots defeated the New York Collegiate Baseball League's Utica Brewers 7-3 Wednesday night at Colburn Park. The game results of the game will not reflect each teams' stats as the game was an exhibition.

Wasting no time in visiting the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, the Brewers scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first. The right fielder Matt Bahnick (Tallahassee CC) got things started by singling in Eros Modeno (Bethune Cookman). With one out in the inning and a man on third, the catcher Daniel De La Calle (Miami Dade) flied out to right field, giving Bahnick the chance to stroll home on the sacrifice.

The Pilots got their offense going as they tacked on four runs in two innings, starting in the second inning. With a man on second, the right fielder Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) singled to right field allowing Josh Perez (Mississippi College) to score on close play at the plate.

Eventually reaching third base, Landi scored the tying run as Ben Bostick drove him in on a RBI single that was hit to shallow right field. In the bottom of the third inning, Perez recorded an RBI as he blasted a triple into left field, giving Tyler Mcdonald (Millersville Univ.) the chance to score all the way from first. Landi recorded his second RBI of the night as he singled Perez home making the score 4-2.

The Pilots extended their lead to 7-3 as the game progressed. Josh Crowdus (Delta State), Adam Grace (Erie CC), and Austin Logan (UC Davis) all crossed the plate for the team to build the lead. Crowdus scored in the bottom of the sixth, while Grace and Logan scored in the bottom of the eighth.

Chris Rubio (Cal State Fullerton) earned the loss for the Brewers. In the righty's five innings of work, he gave up eight hits, four runs, three of them earned, while striking out 3 and walking two. Phillip Flach (Samford Univ.) got the start for the Pilots in a winning effort. In his seven innings of labor, the righty gave up seven hits, 3 earned runs while striking one and walking one.

Landi made a special appearance on the mound for the team. He pitched two inning while giving up no hits and walking one.

The Pilots will travel to Elmira to face the Pioneers at Dunn Field on Thursday night, with a start time of 7:05 p.m.
