Newark Pilots Winning Streak Ends After Loss to Jamestown

The Newark Pilots (19-11) dropped a Perfect Game Collegiate League contest to Jamestown on Sunday, 15-5. The loss is the Pilots first of the season series against the Jammers and ends their three-game winning streak.
The Pilots fell behind early after allowing two runs in the top of the first, but responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Chase Cockrell (Hinds C.C.) and Chris Whelan (Parkland J.C.) added back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 2.
After issuing three walks in the first, Newark starter Sam Harrington (Itawamba C.C.) settled down to throw the next four innings without allowing a run. Harrington effectively kept the ball down in the zone to induce groundball outs.
Newark would go to the bullpen in the sixth inning and it would be all downhill from there. The Pilots bullpen would allow 13 runs in the next four innings in relief of Harrington. Ben Brookover (UT-San Antonio) would add three RBIs to increase his league-leading total to 29.
Trailing 12-2 in the seventh, the Pilots would mount a bit of a comeback. Darian Herncane (Binghamton) and Julian Gallup (Niagara) would reach base with hits to start the frame and would be brought home on a hit from Acy Owen (Hinds C.C.) to make it 12-4.
Owen would later score on groundout from Chris Sharpe (UMass-Lowell) for the Pilots fifth run. The RBI from Sharpe ties him for the lead with Whelan at 15. Unfortunately, the Pilots comeback attempt would end there.
The Pilots will celebrate the Fourth of July with an exhibition matchup with Cortland on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Newark's next PGCBL game will be at Colburn Park on Tuesday as the Geneva Red Wings come to town.
