Newark Pilots News Release

The Newark Pilots dropped a home game to Victor, 7-3 at Colburn Park on Monday night. The Pilots fell to 3-2 on the year after losing their first home game of the season.

Newark scored its first run on an RBI double from Luke Reynolds (Mississippi State) that brought home Chris Sharpe (UMass-Lowell) to even the score at 1 in the first inning.

The Railriders would get to Pilots starter Russ Olive(UMass-Lowell) in the third inning, tallying three runs on three RBI doubles to take a 4-1 lead. Olive's day would end after the inning with his final line totaling four runs (three earned) on five hits in three innings.

"He went out there and battled," Pilots coach Chris Edmondson said of Olive's performance. "He just left a few pitches up and they took advantage of it."

Edmondson would call on right-hander Xan Reese in relief of Olive. Reese would throw three scoreless frames to make up for a short outing from the starter. Max Ludka (Saginaw Valley State) would follow that up with two scoreless frames of his own.

"The middle relievers handled things well tonight," Edmondson said. "They went out and threw some tough innings when we really needed them."

After a two-out single, Matt Zielonko (Parkland J.C.) stole second base to put himself in scoring position and was driven home on a base hit up the middle from Bo-Hao Huang (Fu Jen Catholic). Huang has started two games this summer and had an RBI hit in each of them.

The Pilots entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 7-2 and scored a run on a bases-loaded walk and brought the tying run to the plate. However, the game ended on a 6-4-3 double plat to seal the victory for the Railriders.

Newark has its first scheduled day off Tuesday, but will return to action on Wednesday as the Jamestown Jammers come to Colburn Park. The Pilots swept a two-game series at Jamestown to open the season last week.
