Newark Pilots News Release
Mike Saunders (Saginaw Valley State) was sensational over 7.2 innings to lead the Newark Pilots to a 4-3 win over the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park on Wednesday night. 857 spectators watched the Pilots gain a split of the two game set in two hours and 28 minutes.
Mark Leiter Jr. started for Amsterdam and allowed a run scoring single to Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) in the third and watched another run come across on an error in the same frame.
The Mohawks starter surrendered another run in the fourth on a sac fly by Michael Bolling (Lewis), he left after five innings and 81 pitches and allowed six hits, three runs, and struck out five.
The Mohawks got run in the fourth on an RBI single by Zach Shank (Marist) and another in the sixth on a fielder's choice groundout by Jude Vidrine (Lamar).
With the Pilots on top 3-2 in the top of the eighth, Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) scored what proved to be the game winning run when Mohawks reliever Mike Dodakian (Dartmouth) fielded a comebacker and tried to nix Swenson on his way to third, the throw was errant and the unearned run scored to make it 4-2 Newark.
The Mohawks cut the lead in half when Shank blasted a two-out double into the left centerfield gap that scored Andrew Green (East Tennessee State) and made it 4-3. Saunders was then lifted in favor of Matt Frahm (Lewis) who got Vidrine to fly out to center and strand the tying run on second.
Mark Scott worked a perfect ninth for his third save and helped Michael Saunders move to 2-1 on the season. Mark Leiter gets the loss in relief and falls to 0-3. Mike Dodakian pitched three innings of relief for Amsterdam and struck out seven batters without allowing an earned run.
Amsterdam drops to 6-9 on the summer while Newark evens their record at 7-7. The same two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:00 in Newark.
