RED BULLS FACE GALAXY IN DESERT DIAMOND CUP

Finishing up their 2012 preseason, the Red Bulls have two more matches in the 2012 FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup, beginning on Wednesday when they face defending MLS Cup Champion, the Los Angeles Galaxy at 10:00 PM ET. The Galaxy has split its first two games of the competition, bouncing back from a 3-2 tournament-opening loss to the New England Revolution with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in their last match. Former Red Bull Mike Magee leads the team with two goals so far in the competition. The Red Bulls will then wrap up their preseason and the Desert Diamond Cup on Saturday when they play in either the Third Place Match or the Final.

NEW YORK FALLS 2-0 TO REVOLUTION IN DESERT CUP

The New York Red Bulls dropped a 2-0 decision to the New England Revolution at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in the Desert Diamond Cup last Saturday evening. New England received a pair of second half goals from Kelyn Rowe.

Both teams were looking to get settled into the match in the first half. New York had the first shot of the night in the 12th minute, when Dax McCarty cut to his left foot and drove it over the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Jose Angulo's in-swinging corner kick found a wide open Brandon Barklage, whose header was wide.

In the second half, New England earned the first scoring chance of the interval six minutes in, as Rowe found an on-rushing Saer Sene. Sene, however, could not put his shot on goal.

Sene had the best chance of the match up to that point with 15 minutes remaining in the encounter. The forward had space at the top of the box and unleashed a shot that beat Jeremy Vuolo and slammed off the left post. The rebound fell to New England's Luiscito Campisi and his first-timer was caught by Vuolo.

The Revolution took the lead for good two minutes later. Sene was able to slip through on goal, but Tyler Ruthven slid in to prevent the Revolution player from taking a shot. Rowe was on hand for the loose ball and put it into the back of the net.

The same combination wrapped up the result in the 84th minute. Sene passed it to Rowe, who raced in and his left-footed curling shot nestled into the top corner of the net.

RED BULL RETO DEL SOL ENDS IN SCORELESS DRAW

Despite several scoring chances on both ends of the field, the New York Red Bulls and Mexican side UNAM Pumas played to a 0-0 tie on Feb. 23 night at Chase Field in "Red Bull Reto del Sol".

New York had the first scoring chance of the match when midfielder Dane Richards had time on the right wing and cut it back to Thierry Henry. Henry's ensuing blast was stopped by a diving Alejandro Palacios. Thursday's match marked Henry's first appearance for the Red Bulls in preseason since he returned from his loan with English Premiership side, Arsenal FC, last week.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara helped keep the game tied in the 15th minute. A Pumas corner kick cleared by New York's Stephen Keel was controlled by Pumas' David Cabrera and the midfielder whipped an attempt on goal that Meara went down to parry. Teemu Tainio was there to clear the rebound away with Juan Carlos Cacho lurking.

In the 24th minute, Pumas had the best chance of the match to that point, as Martin Bravo slipped through Cacho on goal. Meara, however, was able to knock away the forward's 15-yard shot. Four minutes later, Cacho was this time the provider, finding an on-rushing Bravo, whose chip sailed over the crossbar.

With six minutes before the intermission, Red Bulls forward Kenny Cooper had an open look on net off a Jan Gunnar Solli feed, but could not get his first-time effort on frame. Soon after, Pumas forward Eduardo Herrara's flick on from a Javier Cortes out-swinger bounced just past the left post. Then, in the last play of the half, Richards outraced his marker in Pumas' penalty box and rolled one across the face of goal and inches from the side netting.

Both teams searched for the opening tally in the second half and Bravo nearly got it, earning possession in New York's half and pinging it off the top of the crossbar moments in. In the 54th minute, midfielder Joel Lindpere nearly made it 1-0 when he barely missed a Richards low feed in the six yard box after Solli put the speedy Jamaican into space.

The Red Bulls nearly stole the result in the 89th minute. Henry passed it in the penalty box to a wide open Dax McCarty, who centered it towards Cooper. However, the last Pumas defender got his foot to the ball and cleared it out of harm's way.

DESERT DIAMOND CUP OPENS WITH 1-0 LOSS TO REAL SALT LAKE

In the opening night of the Desert Diamond Cup last Wednesday, Feb. 22 the New York Red Bulls fell, 1-0, to Western Conference foe Real Salt Lake. After a scoreless first half, Real Salt Lake earned the result after Paulo Jr.'s header found the back of the net 15 minutes from full time.

The first scoring chance of the match came to the Red Bulls, which fielded a younger lineup Wednesday, in the eighth minute. Left back Connor Lade received a diagonal pass and swung in a cross that was nodded over the bar by forward Corey Hertzog. Moments later, New York forward Jhonny Arteaga forced goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to push his shot away.

On the other end, Real Salt Lake midfielder Nico Muniz was inches from giving his side the lead, creating enough space at the top of the penalty box and curling an attempt that beat goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo and slammed off the right post. Vuolo came up trumps for New York in the 22nd minute, parrying a Yordany Alvarez strike from 15-yards-out.

The teams entered halftime scoreless but had prime chances two minutes from the break. Real Salt Lake's Cody Arnoux cut in to his right foot and his on-target blast was stopped by Vuolo. Soon after, Hertzog got to a loose ball first and was denied from close range by Reynish.

Real Salt Lake tallied the only goal of the match 15 minutes from full time. Substitute Fabian Espindola raced down the left wing and his delivery into the 18-yard-box was met by the head of Paulo Jr., who nodded it into the back of the net.

Hertzog could have tied the game in the 82nd minute, taking a Tyler Ruthven feed and rifling his long-range shot over the crossbar.
