Red Bull New York News Release
HARRISON, NJ (July 17, 2014) - New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill won the 2014 MLS Best Athlete award at the 2014 ESPYS last night in Los Angeles, CA.
With 2013 being his first full season with the Red Bulls, Cahill led the team with 11 goals and added five assists. The former Everton standout and MLS All-Star earned a spot in the MLS Best XI and helped the Red Bulls win the Supporters' Shield - given to the team with the most points in the regular season - for the first time in club history. Cahill scored seven goals and added two assists in the final 11 games of the campaign which saw New York go unbeaten in its last eight matches.
Cahill most recently returned from participating in his third FIFA World Cup for Australia. The all-time leading goalscorer for his country, Cahill recorded two goals this summer, including arguably the best goal of the tournament - a left-footed volley against the Netherlands. This season for New York, Cahill has played in 11 games, notching a goal and an assist.
The other finalists for the ESPY - ESPN's annual awards show - were the Montreal Impact's Marco Di Vaio, LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane and the Chicago Fire's Mike Magee. Fans were able to vote on the award up until July 16.
Tickets are on sale now for the Red Bulls' next MLS game at Red Bull Arena against the San Jose Earthquakes this Saturday at 7:00 PM, by calling 1.877.727.6223 or logging onto tickets.newyorkredbulls.com. There will be a post-game fireworks show following the match.
