Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
Edinburg, TX; January 23, 2006 - The Edinburg Coyotes and United League Baseball (ULB) announced today that they have sold the contract of Catcher Robinson Cancel to the New York Mets. Cancel becomes the second Edinburg Coyote and fourth ULB player to be sold to a Major League Organization. Cancel will report to the Mets Spring Training Facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida where he is expected to compete for a job with their Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Mets.
Cancel is a 13-year veteran of professional baseball with stops at every level of the game. The 30 year old Mayaguez, Puerto Rico native was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 1994 MLB draft. He spent eight years in the Brewers organization including a 15 game trip to the big leagues in 1999. His affiliated baseball travels also had stops with the Athletics, Tigers, Devil Rays, and Cardinals organizations. Known as a smart hitter with power, Cancel is a career .263 hitter and a threat to thrown out would be base stealers from behind home plate.
"We are so proud to have another one of our own move on to bigger and better things," Coyotes General Manager Michael Beasley said. "Cancel was one of our leaders last year and he will surely be missed, but we are glad he is getting another crack at being on an affiliated team roster."
Cancel was an integral part of the formula that made the Edinburg Coyotes one of the best overall teams in independent baseball. Cancel hit played in 89 of the Coyotes 90 game schedule hitting .297 with 52 runs batted in. Cancel was second on the club in homers with 10 and led the team in doubles with 24. Cancel was named the first ever Edinburg Coyotes Most Valuable Player for the 2006 season and was also selected for the United League All-Star Game.
Cancel joins Edwar Ramirez (Edinburg, Yankees), Kevin Bass (San Angelo, White Sox), Edwin Maldonado (Laredo, Astros) as ULB players who have been purchased by Major League Baseball clubs.
The Edinburg Coyotes are members of United League Baseball an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is preparing for its second season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007. Opening Day for all of United League Baseball is May 8, 2007.
