San Angelo Colts News Release
The San Angelo Colts have added another piece to their bullpen for the 2007 season. You can never have enough pitching, not to mention left-handed pitching, so the Colts have signed southpaw Brad Boutwell. Boutwell pronounced "Bout" like a boxing match, has been in a fight to make it into professional baseball since he entered high school, and finally did well.
Boutwell much like Michael Jordan did not make his high school team after trying out every year. Finally, in his senior year convinced his coach to let him make the team just to throw batting practice, but still did not play in a single game. Brad then went on to college, attending San Jacinto Jr. College in Houston, and red-shirted for a year but still never had the chance to throw a pitch.
Boutwell never gave up though, playing in men's leagues in Denver Colorado for five years. The rocky road did not end their though, Brad tried out year after year for teams in the Central League, American Association, and even last year in the United League for the Edinburg Coyotes. Working as a bar manager and as a baseball instructor he finally received some help. That help came from another southpaw, former Colts pitcher Dallas Mahan, who played for San Angelo in 2001 & 2003. Brad also works out with former major league pitcher and current Houston Astros' scout Scipio Spinks.
Colts Skipper Doc Edwards referred to Scipio and his wisdom on Brad, and Edwards signed Boutwell to a contract. The 27-year-old's dream finally came true, as this Cinderella finally received his glass slipper. "I have a professional contract on my wall, it surreal", said Boutwell. Brad a four-pitch pitcher, has an arsenal that consists of a change-up, curve, slider, two and four-seam fastball, with his fastball ranging from 86-88 MPH.
The San Angelo Colts are part of six-team league that make up United League Baseball. The independent league has teams located in San Angelo, Laredo, Amarillo, Edinburg, and Rio Grand Valley Texas as well as Alexandria Louisiana, and began play in the 2006 season.
