Brownsville wins fifth straight

HARLINGEN, Texas - Damon Miller went five scoreless innings for Brownsville, allowing only one hit, to lead the Toros to their fifth straight victory, 6-0, over the Edinburg Coyotes at Harlingen Field on Thursday.

Miller (2-1), making his first start of the Texas Winter League, walked one, while striking out four in the win for Brownsville. Brad Turney pitched a perfect sixth, and Jason Moody closed out the second straight shutout for the Toros. In the last three games, the Toros have outscored their opponents 22-1.

Brownsville got on the scoreboard in the second inning after a leadoff walk to Kevin MacIlvane. Ryan Valyan, who was 2-for-3, singled home the first frun.

Brian Nichols continued his hot hand at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Nichols, an Alabama State University product, is 13-for-24 (.542) in his seven games in the league.

Edinburg starter Jorge Varela (1-1) took the loss, lasting four innings, giving up four runs and four walks. Alberto Duran pitched the last two innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits to close out the game for Edinburg. The Coyotes dropped to 2-7.
