Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - Saint John Sea Dogs fans helped shatter the goal of raising $10,000 for Charlotte County flood relief on New Year's Eve.

The Sea Dogs asked fans to make donations at the Dec. 31 game against the Moncton Wildcats, with the Sea Dogs Foundation pledging to match the first $5,000 dollar for dollar. Fans came through with $7,000, which, added to the $5,000 from the Foundation and an additional $4,000 from the team, brings the total to more than $16,000.

"I'm impressed, but not surprised, by the outpouring of support from our fans in the Saint John area as well as those visiting from Moncton. We have the greatest fans in the country, and they realize this is bigger than the Rivalry Cup or any hockey game," said Sea Dogs president Wayne Long. "We're proud to have played a small role in helping our neighbours in Charlotte County rebuild, and we're even prouder of the way the fans stepped up."

Last month, some 100 houses were flooded due to a combination of rain and melting snow, driving some from their homes over Christmas. The sold-out building on New Year's Eve presented a great opportunity for the team and its fans to do their part for those affected.

"The Sea Dogs Foundation truly thanks all Sea Dogs fans that supported the fundraiser on New Year's Eve to assist the flood victims in Charlotte County," said foundation chairperson Jane Forestell. "The flooding was a devastating loss to our region and the entire Sea Dogs organization was proud to assist with the recovery efforts."

The damage to New Brunswick alone has been estimated at $50 million from three December storms that have hit the Maritimes. The proceeds from the New Year's Eve fundraiser will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

"We want to thank the Saint John Sea Dogs, their Foundation and fans for their generous support as the Canadian Red Cross continues to provide assistance to hundreds of people affected by recent flooding in southwestern and central New Brunswick," said Cynthia Reicker of the Red Cross.

Canadians wishing to donate financially can do so online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111, or in person at Red Cross offices during business hours. Cheques made out to the Canadian Red Cross and earmarked "NB Flood December 2010" can be mailed to Canadian Red Cross, Donation Processing Centre, P.O. Box 39, Saint John, NB, E2L 3X3.
