May 13, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
New Mexico United and New Mexico 811 are thrilled to announce the second round of additions to the U-23 roster in the team's history. United Academy standouts defender Stephen Romero, midfielder Mikah Madrid and goalkeeper Evan Kowalski join a trio of academy graduates announced yesterday to bring the number of announced players to six ahead of the inaugural season, with many more announcements yet to come.
"Stephen, Mikah, and Evan have been phenomenal pieces of the New Mexico United Academy program," said United Academy and U-23 Head Coach Luke Sanford. "Without their hard work, humility, diligence, and action, our academy would not have achieved the incredible success it has through it's inaugural season and a half. Now, we're thrilled to bring their energy and effort to USL League Two."
Kowalski was the seventeenth United Academy signing in its inaugural season. The goalkeeper is a student at Volcano Vista High School, and has played club soccer for New Mexico Rush and Pateadores. Kowalski has played exceptionally well for the New Mexico United Academy, leading the team in save %, saves, shutouts, starts and appearances.
Madrid was the twentieth United Academy signing in its inaugural season. The midfielder is a student at La Cueva High School, and has played club soccer at New Mexico Rush. Madrid has exerted expert control over the midfield in United Academy matches, adding goals in several matches along the way.
Romero was the twenty-second United Academy signing in its inaugural season. The defender is a student at Albuquerque High School, and won one of his two state titles in their 2019 undefeated season. Romero adds a sense of calm to the United U-23 back line, having performed incredibly well in leading the Academy group.
United U-23 will compete in the Mountain Division in the 2022 season. The Mountain Division schedule will be released soon on USL League Two's website and social accounts.
