New Mexico United News Release
Today, New Mexico United and the United States Soccer Federation announced the date, time and location for United's second round match-up in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. United will take on the winner of USL League 2's Park City Red Wolves SC, and the NPSL's Las Vegas Legends in the second round. The match will be held at the University of New Mexico Track & Field and Soccer Complex on Tuesday, April 5th at 7:30 pm.
Tickets for the match will be made available to fans soon, as United and UNM collaborate to prepare the facility and create an exciting atmosphere for fans. United is grateful to UNM Athletics and the UNM Facilities Office for allowing the use of the complex for this exciting match-up.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States - is a knockout tournament in which teams from across divisions compete to be named the best club in the nation. In 2021, a record 103 teams from professional, semi-pro, and amateur levels will participate in the tournament.
In 2019, New Mexico United defeated USL Championship clubs Phoenix Rising and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the first two rounds, and then topped MLS sides Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas in the following two before ultimately bowing out to tournament finalist Minnesota United in the quarterfinal. That quarterfinal match saw hundreds of the Black & Yellow faithful travel aboard a chartered airplane to St. Paul for the match.
United - and all eligible USL Championship clubs - enter in the second round of the tournament, while USL League 1, NISA, and amateur teams enter in round one. MLS clubs will enter the tournament in rounds three and four.
