(Albuquerque, NM) - The New Mexico Ice Wolves® are proud to announce that goalie Bení Halász has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. Halász, 20, is in his second and final season of playing junior hockey in the NAHL for the NM Ice Wolves. The 6'0/180 lbs. native of Budapest, Hungary, is having a career season for the NM Ice Wolves playing a key role in the team leading the South Division. Halász currently leads the NAHL with a 1.85 goals against average and is tied for the league-lead in shutouts with five. He also currently ranks 2nd in wins (21) and save percentage (.933).

"I am extremely proud to announce my commitment to Northern Michigan University and I couldn't have done it without the support of an unbelievable team and coaches," said Halász. "They make my job easier and helped me get to the next level. It's a dream come true for me and a step that gets me closer to my ultimate career goal of playing in the NHL but for now we still have work to do this season."

NM Ice Wolves Head Coach Phil Fox always enjoys helping his players reach the next level of their playing career. "I'm very excited for Bení on his commitment to Northern Michigan," said Fox. "He's earned every bit of this through his work ethic and dedication to get better. Good things happen to people who work for them and Bení made it happen."

Halász has been honored as the South Division's Star of the Week three times this season, including twice in the last four weeks. He was also selected to and played in the recent 2022 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA, where he stopped 36 of 38 shots in two appearances for the South Division team.

Halász is now the fifth member of the 2021-22 NM Ice Wolves team who has secured an NCAA Division I commitment.

The NM Ice Wolves continue their 2021-2022 season this weekend with a three-game road trip starting Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 20 when the team plays South Division rival El Paso Rhinos in El Paso, Texas. The team returns home to the Outpost Ice Arenas in Albuquerque, NM in March for a two game homestand against the Shreveport Mud Bugs on Friday, March 18 - Saturday, March 19. After the team and league ended the 2019-2020 season early, as all major sports leagues did due to COVID-19, with no playoffs the NM Ice Wolves were honored by the entire North American Hockey League as the NAHL Organization of the Year and the NAHL's South Division Organization of the Year. Alex Dominique became the first ever NM Ice Wolves' player named to the NAHL All-South Division Rookie Team and the team's jersey was voted best in the league in a virtual playoff voted on by fans league wide in the first ever NAHL Tournament of Jerseys.
