WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) went 5-5 in their last ten games. The Cards opened a six-game home stand last week at Skylands Park, and started with a win against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox), before dropping the final two games of the series. They rebounded to take two of three from the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) and finish the home stand at 3-3. New Jersey then hit the road for a six-game trip, and spilt the first two games with the Tri-City Valley Cats (Houston Astros) to improve their record to 20-21, good for 4th place in the McNamara Division of the NY-Penn League, 6.5 games back of the front running Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees).
BIRDS WITH BATS: After a slow start, OF Chad Gabriel has begun to heat up, hitting .382 (13-34) with 6 RBIs over his last eight games. He has raised his average to .286 (32-122), which ranks third on the team. OF Carlos De La Cruz, the Cardsleading hitter at .291 (25-86), pounded out 14 hits with 3 RBIs over a span of 9 games. C Brandon Yarbrough, who hit his first homer of the season at Tri-City on 8/2, has hit .311 (14-45) at Skylands, although 10 of his 14 extra-base hits have come on the road. As a team, New Jersey is hitting .250 (342-1367).
CARDS ON THE MOUND: RHP Mitchell Boggs, who started the season 0-3, has rebounded to win his last two starts, including a 3-1 victory over the Ironbirds on 7/29 at Skylands. His other victory came at Vermont, 7/24, in which he threw 5 innings and gave up 3 earned runs. RHP Nick Webber, who struck out a season-high 10 against Aberdeen on 7/28, went 2-1 in his last three starts, allowing only 3 earned runs in 19 innings. RHP Jessen Grant continues to throw well out of the bullpen. He has posted a 1.50 ERA, with 14 strikeouts in 18 innnings. RHP Matthew Trent has been dominant in the closers role, converting all 9 of his save chances and giving up just 1 run in 13.1 innings. The New Jersey staff has a 3.36 team ERA.
WEEK AHEAD: New Jersey continues their six-game road trip this week against the Valley Cats with the rubber game of the teamsthree game set, before a weekend series with the Jammers in Jamestown (Florida Marlins).
