Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
August 4, 2005 - In one of the sharpest played games of the season, the IronBirds (15-27) maintained total control over the Batavia Muckdogs (17-24) on their way to a 6-1 victory. New York Penn-League ERA and strikeout leader Radhames Liz extended his lead in both categories (0.96 ERA and 71 K's - 8 shy of the team record of 79 by Carlos Perez, 2004) by throwing 6 scoreless innings and striking out 9 on the way to his 5th win of the season.
A scoreless stalemate was broken in the bottom of the 5th, when catcher Kyle Dahlberg hit his first professional home run, a 2-run shot into the leftfield bullpen. The defensive wizard had 3 hits and a sacrifice on the night, raising his average 49 points in the last 2 games (.129 to .178) with 5 hits in his last 5 at-bats. He also completed two potential rally-killing double plays by throwing out runners stealing second after a strikeout.
The âBirds put 4 more runs on the board in the bottom of the 6th, thanks to Nolan Reimold's 7th home run of the season, a 3-run blast that put the game out of reach on the heels of a Dahlberg RBI single.
Ryan Schwabe pitched the 7th and allowed the lone run of the game. Bryce Chamberlin pitched the final two scoreless innings to close out the Muckdogs.
Game two of the three game set is Friday night in Aberdeen. Garrett Olson will take the bump at 7:05.
